Well Clinic is positioned to become the first mental health worker-owned cooperative in the United States.
As a Certified B-Corp and recipient of the Best for the World in Governance award, Well Clinic’s mission is to improve our collective mental health by providing an optimal environment for change for our clients, clinicians, and community.
According to Maya Johansson, CEO, Owner, and Co-Founder of Well Clinic, “there needs to be a better model to serve clinicians and clients alike. With a worker-owned structure, therapists are able to receive the support they need without giving up their autonomy or paying a third-party employer a hefty fee.”
“Coops are a vital tool to closing the wealth gap in the US and put money and power back into the hands of the workers. The healthcare field is in dire need of this transformation,” says Johansson.
We envision a future where business decisions are made through a lens of what is good for workers and communities, leading to businesses that are more successful, communities that are more resilient, and workers who have stable jobs and economic security.
Benefits of Worker-Owned Cooperatives
Research by The Democracy Collaborative and Project: Equity¹ shows that worker-owned cooperatives have the following benefits:
- For worker members, benefits include better-paying jobs, wealth and skill-building, and enhanced control over their work lives.
- For businesses, benefits include reduced employee turnover and increased profitability and longevity.
- For society in general, worker cooperatives foster social innovation, expand access to business ownership, and train people in democratic practice.
Currently in the fundraising stage, Well Clinic has set a goal of completing the transition by 2022.
